SailGP Christchurch Bids Farewell: Coutts Cites ‘Minority Groups’ as Cause for Last Event

-

The CEO of SailGP, Sir Russell Coutts, announced in an interview that the SailGP event in Christchurch will not return in 2025 and possibly never again. Coutts cited the intransigence of “minority groups” as the main reason behind this decision, stating that these groups complicate the organization of the event by not allowing suitable dates in the international calendar. He explained that, despite the large number of tickets sold and the positive economic impact of the event on the city, the complexity of securing appropriate dates has led to considering other locations in New Zealand, such as Auckland, Wellington, and Queenstown.
